$10 Self-Pay Drug Plan
MHSI piloted a new project in 2006 to help low-income, uninsured agricultural workers obtain needed medications without a voucher. Since then, the Pharmacy Card Plan has been very successful due to those of you that agreed to this plan. Farmworker Health Services, Inc. (now Health Outreach Partners) awarded MHSI the Sister Cecilia B. Abhold Award in 2007 in recognition of innovation in health outreach services in migrant and seasonal farmworkers. The plan was one of only 3 programs nationwide to be bestowed with the honor.
The $10 Self-Pay Drug Plan consists of a list of commonly prescribed generic medications in specific quantities that can be dispensed for $10.00 or less. When the usual and customary charge is less than $10.00, the lower amount is charged.
With the pharmacy card plan:
- The MHSI health center clinical staff/voucher provider completes a patient assessment, reviews the patient's medication needs/prescription, and gives the client an "RX form".
- The patient presents the "RX form" to the pharmacist along with the prescription.
- The cash payment of $10 or less per medication is collected from the patient at the time the script is filled.
- The pharmacy staff indicates on the form the medication was dispensed, signs it, and faxes the form back to MHSI.
